BeatLAB

2025 // Riot of Colors/The Hip Hop Museum

Created exclusively for the Hip Hop Museum in the Bronx, BeatLAB is an immersive installation that invites visitors to step inside a reimagined drum machine. Rather than tapping on a static 2D sampler, guests interact with a glowing, holographic 3D interface projected on large-format displays or touch-enabled surfaces. Each trigger ignites neon particles, shifting light patterns, and reactive animations that visually echo the rhythms of hip-hop.

At the heart of the experience is a fast, intuitive 6-track, 16-step sequencer inspired by the classic machines that shaped hip-hop production. Visitors can explore curated presets such as Classic Boom Bap or Trap Half-Time, remix patterns on the fly, or build their own beats using an eclectic library of kicks, snares, hats, and textures rooted in the culture. The engine’s responsive visual system mirrors every musical decision—pads illuminate, particles pulse, camera angles glide—creating a sense of performance even for first-time creators.

As an exhibit, BeatLAB is designed to feel physical, communal, and alive. The installation blends game-like interaction with museum-quality storytelling, allowing visitors to literally play through hip-hop’s rhythmic legacy. Fully browser-based and highly scalable, it can run on kiosks, projection walls, or immersive rooms, turning beat-making into a shared, futuristic experience that celebrates the Bronx as the birthplace of hip-hop innovation.
